Information Please: An Amazing Person

Whose life have you touched today?

Remember to live and savor every moment…..this is not a dress rehearsal!

Antique Wall Telephone.

This story was recently emailed to me with no credit to the author. Since I teach a Bible class at a nursing home, it was the perfect story for them. I find that they love stories of any kind. Many had used a telephone such as the one shown, which is the type described in the story.

Galatians 5:16  –Walk in your spirit nature and you will not fulfill the desires of your flesh nature.

The more we “feed” our spirit nature with God’s Word, the more natural is walking in our spirit nature.

Information Please

When I was quite young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember well the
polished old case fastened to the wall. The shiny receiver hung on the side of the box. I was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when my mother talk to it.

Then I discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person – her name was Information Please and there was nothing she did not know. Information Please could supply anybody’s number and the correct time.

My first personal experience with this “genie-in-the-bottle” came one day while my mother was visiting a neighbor. Amusing myself at the tool bench in the basement, I whacked my finger with a hammer.  The pain was terrible, but there didn’t seem to be any reason in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy.  I walked around the house sucking my throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway – The telephone!  Quickly I ran for the footstool in the parlor and dragged it to the landing.  Climbing up I unhooked the receiver in the parlor and held it to my ear -”Information Please” I said into the mouthpiece
just above my head.

A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear, “Information.” “I hurt my finger. . .” I wailed into the phone. The tears came readily enough now that I had an audience.  “Isn’t your mother home?” came the question.  “Nobody’s home but me.” I blubbered.  “Are you bleeding?” “No,” I replied. “I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts.”

“Can you open your icebox?” she asked.  I said I could. “Then chip off a little piece of ice and hold it to your finger.”  After that I called Information Please for everything.  I asked her for help with my geography and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math, and she told me my pet chipmunk I had caught in the park just the day before would eat fruits and nuts.

And there was the time that Petey, our pet canary died.  I called  Information Please and told her the sad story.  She listened, then said the usual things grown-ups say to soothe a child.  But I was unconsoled.  Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers, feet up on the bottom of a cage? She must have sensed my deep concern, for she said quietly, “Paul, always remember
that there are other worlds to sing in.” Somehow I felt better.

Another day I was on the telephone. “Information Please.” “Information,” said the now familiar voice.  “How do you spell fix?” I asked.

All this took place in a small town in the Pacific  northwest.  Then when I was 9 years old, we moved across the country to Boston.  I missed my friend very much. Information Please belonged in that old wooden box back home, and I somehow never thought of trying the tall,
shiny new phone that sat on the hall table.  Yet as I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me; often in moments of doubt and perplexity I would recall the serene sense of security I had then. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.

A few years later, on my way west to college, my plane put down in Seattle. I had about half an hour or so between plane, and I spent 15 minutes or so on the phone with my sister, who lived there now.  Then without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown operator and said, “Information Please.”  Miraculously, I heard again the small, clear voice I knew so well, “Information.” I hadn’t planned this but I heard myself saying, “Could you tell me please how-to spell fix?” There was a long pause. Then came the soft spoken answer, “I guess that your
finger must have healed by now.”  I laughed, “So it’s really still you,” I said. “I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time.” “I wonder, she said, if you know how much your calls meant to me. I never had any children, and I used to look forward to your calls.”I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again when I came back to visit my sister.  “Please do, just ask for Sally.”

Just three months later I was back in Seattle. . .A different voice answered Information and I asked for Sally.  “Are you a friend?”  “Yes, a very old friend.” “Then I’m sorry to have to tell you. Sally has been working part-time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago.”  But before I could hang up she said, “Wait a minute. Did you say your name was Paul?” “Yes.”  “Well, Sally left a message for you.  She wrote it down. Here it is. I’ll read it: ‘Tell him I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll know what I mean.”   I thanked her and hung up. I did know what Sally meant.

The Trinity: Three In One

How to Model the Trinity: The Three Divine Person of God

A craft pretzel made of clay models the Trinity with each compartment representing God in three persons; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

A single roll of clay is shaped like a pretzel. This clay craft can be used to teach young and old about the Trinity.

The Trinity is one God in three persons. This concept is as difficult for kids as it is for adults. If you work with children, you might use the Pretzel Clay Craft Activity, which like the diagram shown, is made from one roll of clay, but has three parts representing the three divine persons of the trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

I like the pretzel Trinity model, but for me the water cycle is an even better Trinity model.

The Water Cycle

Water is a compound that can exist in three different forms, depending on temperature. The forms of water from the coldest to the hottest are: solid, liquid, vapor (gas).

This jar used in science to model the water cycle is a beautiful model for the Trinity of God.

The water cycle demonstrates that water molecules are the same no matter what state they are in, ice, liquid or gas. The same is true of the divine persons of the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

It doesn’t matter what form water is in, each form is made of water molecules. The Water Cycle diagram shows frozen water molecules- ice cubes, liquid water molecules- liquid puddles and liquid streaming down the insides of the jar, vapor water molecules-not visible but labeled as being in the jar.

No matter the form, water molecules are the same and are constantly being changed from one form to another.

Did You Know!

The water that Jesus was baptized in is still somewhere on         Earth? It might be part of the water you are drinking or in snow flakes, or water vapor in the air.

Relate the Water Cycle to the Trinity

IMAGINE a specific amount of God Particles and like the water molecules, the God Particles are exactly alike and can be in three different forms at the same time and there is a constant exchange of God particles between the three forms so that the only difference is the manifestation of the God particles as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

God the Son took on some man particles (which He created) for the short period He was on Earth. Thus, the incarnate Jesus Christ was a man but at the same time was God. Being God, He was impeccable–He could not sin and did not sin. Being man He experienced pain –suffered.

Imagine the Different Persons or Forms of God

Solid God Particles–The incarnate Jesus Christ–God the Son.
Liquid God Particles– God the Father
Vapor God Particles– God the Holy Spirit

Unlike the water cycle, my imaginary model of the trinity does not have a hierarchy. I admit that my brain has been programed to list the three divine persons of God in this order:

God the father
God the Son
God the Holy Spirit

But the Bible refers to the three persons as one and the same. For example, the first chapter of John is about the incarnate Jesus Christ.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.

For the first time this makes sense to me. It’s like having ice cubes in a glass of  water. The solid ice is with the liquid water and the solid and liquid are both made up of water molecules. There is even an exchange of water molecules between the ice and the liquid as well as with the water vapor in the air above the liquid water and ice cubes.

Walking in the Spirit

“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”Galatians 5: 16

When I realized that I have two separate, independent natures, I began to better understand the Bible. For example, Psalms 119:1 describes someone who is blameless.

BLAMELESS? Sinless?
How can that be when other verses  emphatically say that ALL have sinned and if we say we have not sinned we are liars.

The solution is that we have two natures–A flesh nature and a Spirit nature.

Galatians 5:16 says that have a choice to walk in one or the other of of natures.

“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. “

Our two spirits separate are opposite in nature to the point that they fight against each other. This is described in Galatians 5:17a

For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, …..

A description of the actions of our flesh nature is described in Galatians 5:19-21a.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like;

A description of the actions of our Spirit nature is described in Galatians 5:22-23a

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…………..

I want to look at Galatians 5: 17 again, adding the last part of the verse—so that you do not do the things that you wish. When I understood that while my flesh nature dwells in my Earthly vessel (my body), it does not define ME–the real me is defined by my spirit nature. The real me desires only to walk in my spiritual nature and to produce spiritual fruit. But, I succumb to the lure of the flesh nature even though I don’t wish to. Compare it to truly wanting to lose weight or staying on your diabetic diet, but you give in to the flesh’s desire to eat a slice. You know better, you really want to pass it up, but against your own wishes, you eat it.

“For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”

Many people are unnecessarily stressed over Galatians 21b. Remember, verses 20-21a describes the fruit one produces while walking in the flesh nature. The last part of vs. 21 says that if you do these things, you will not go to heaven. Some try to bypass this by stressing the word, “practice.” In other words you have to practice doing these nasty things–do them often–all the time–etc. Does it matter how often you sin? You can only go to heaven if you are absolutely sinless.

“I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

God gave Moses the ten commandments so that His people had a standard–in other words they had rules. Not obeying the rules was considered a sin. God’s Law contains rules against every action of your flesh nature. This means that the flesh nature does nothing but sin–even what might appear to be a sweet and kind action, the flesh nature always has some underling selfish reason for doing it.

Galatians 23b says, “Against such there is no law.” This means that there is no law against producing  fruits of the spirit listed. No matter what you do while walking in the spirit doesn’t break God’s Law. This explains   Galatians 5:18, “But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law.”

Having two natures is like having two personalities–one only sins and the other never sins. If my flesh nature is not allowed in heaven, how can I go to heaven?

Galatians 5:24 is the answer. When Christ was crucified, my flesh nature was crucified with Him. My dead flesh nature remains with my Earthly body when it dies. My Spirit nature goes to heaven.

“And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”

As previously state, the real ME lives in my Spirit Nature. This is described in Galatians 5:25.

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

The more I study God’s Word, the more time I spend walking in the Spirit, thus the more spiritual fruit I produce. But as long as I live on Earth, I have two spirits living in the same Earthly vessel–my body. Romans 7 apply describes the ongoing struggle between Paul’s Flesh Nature and Spirit Nature. Romans 7:24 is a plea expressing self-judgement and cry to be free from his sinful nature. From this verse it appears to me that I will be free when God takes my spirit nature out of my Earthly body–leaving behind my fleshly dead body and dead flesh nature.

“O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Rom.7:24

DOES IT MATTER WHICH BIBLE TRANSLATION YOU READ?

My answer is yes. But, you need to make this decision for yourself by comparing verses from different Bible “translations.” Look at Romans 7:24 in the following Bible versions. Notice the difference in the meanings. Does this matter. YES! You do not want someone’s opinion of the meaning, you want God’s message.

NOTE:: I give my opinion–confirm or support it after you have study God’s Word yourself.

The Son Shiners

When I started teaching a Bible class at a nearby Nursing Home, I chose what I thought to be the perfect name—————-“The Son Shiners.”

My idea was that the name would be a reminder of Jesus-the Son of God-the Light.

As children of God and ambassadors for Christ, we will shine for Jesus. Or something like that.

The class name–“The Son Shiners” was  placed on the activity schedule for each Saturday at 10:00 am.

I never dreamed that the class name was going to be so confusing for one of the ladies. She faithfully came to class and was always disappointed that the singing group never showed up.

Esther: “Where are the singers?”

Me “Esther, we are having our Bible class now. There are no singers.”

Esther: “Will they be here later?”

“No, there will be no singers today?”

Esther: “The schedule said men were coming to sing.” “When are they coming?”

These and other questions were asked each week because each week Esther came to hear the  male singing group called “The Son Shiners.

I finally had  “The Son Shiners” removed from the schedule and replaced it with:

Bible Class-10am

If you have any type of class at a nursing home, my advice is to select a name that is plain and simple.

Freedom to Pray to Jesus

My parents are both buried in Houston at the National Cemetery. I discovered today that the cemetery director has banned the words “God,” and “Jesus” during funeral services or any other gatherings at the cemetery. The director has also demanded that pastor’s submit their prayers for approval and has turned the chapel into a meeting room. The director seems to be taking the heat for this decision, but she doesn’t have the authority to make such decisions. Actually, it is illegal no matter who dreamed it up. I am disappointed that the Federal representatives of Texas have not assured us that there has been some mistake.

Our federal government is making rules that prevent us from worshiping Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Reminds me of the story about Daniel and the Lions Den. In brief, an order signed by the king made it unlawful for Daniel to worship his God for 30 days. Instead, during this time period, only the king could be praised and worshiped.

I’ve not discovered what the penalty for verbally worshiping God/Jesus at the Houston National Cemetery is. I doubt that offenders will be thrown in a pit with hungry lions, which was what happened to Daniel.

I find Daniel’s response to the king’s rule interesting. He just kept praising his God like he had been doing all of his life. In fact, his prayer was to give thanks to God.

“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went home. And in his upper room, with his windows open toward Jerusalem, he knelt down on his knees three times that day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as was his custom since early days.” Daniel 6:10

Daniel had no recourse–the law was basically set in stone. Even the king who had signed this mandate was sorry that he had let himself be tricked by devious men who wanted Daniel killed. The king prayed and fasted all night in hopes that Daniel’s God would save him.

Was Daniel saved? YES!!!
Did Daniel openly defy the order because he was confident that God would save him?

Nothing in the Bible supports this idea. In fact, previously, Daniel’s three friends were placed in a comparable position. They were to worship a golden idol or be thrown into a fiery pit. They refused and the king personally confronted them–giving them another chance–making it clear the punishment for not bowing down to the idol. The king even asked what god they thought might deliver them from his (the king’s) hands. My prayer is that if my path puts me in a similar circumstance that God squelches my flesh nature’s desire to survive so that my spirit nature would proudly give the same answer.

Daniel 3:

16 Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter.

17 If that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king.

18 But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”

Daniel, Shadrach, Mesach, and Abed-Nego did not beg God for their lives. They did not try to bargain with God—-God, If you will save me, then I will —-.

Instead, Daniel, Shadrach, Mesach, and Abed-Nego served, worshiped, praised, and thanked God.

FYI: Daniel, Shadrach, Mesach, and Abed-Nego were thrown into a fiery pit, but were not even scorched.

Back to the Present

At this time, we do not have a king. There are legal actions that can be taken to protect our freedom to worship.

As an individual, there are legal options.

Know that my first thought was to go to the cemetery with a portable microphone and amplifier and loudly express my displeasure. Maybe take a group of people with musical instruments so that we could sing songs about God and Jesus. Would this be illegal? Sad to say–YES!

My daughter, who is more informed about such issue than I am suggested I check out Liberty Institutes’ website. I did and found it very informative about the Houston cemetery issue as well as other things I’d been concerned about. This website makes it easy for me to contact my state and federal representatives.

As a child of God, I can pray. This idea is listed last so that you are left with the most important plan of action.

I also want to include a dialog between king Solomon and the LORD. This was when the temple was being dedicated to the LORD.

12 Then the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice.

13 When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people,

14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

15 Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.

16For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.

17 As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and My judgments,

18 then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘You shall not fail to have a man as ruler in Israel.’

19 “But if you turn away and forsake My statutes and My commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods, and worship them,

20 then I will uproot them from My land which I have given them; and this house which I have sanctified for My name I will cast out of My sight, and will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.

21 “And as for this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and say, ‘Why has the LORD done thus to this land and this house?’

22 Then they will answer, ‘Because they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore He has brought all this calamity on them.’”

The national news proudly showed Obama, the president of the United States, praying with Muslims inside the white house. This same president has announced to foreign countries that the United States is not a Christian nation. Instead, it embraces and supports all religions.

If so, why are Christians being denied the freedom to pray? I will ask my representatives for an answer to this question.

The bottom line is that the past, present, and future of America is in God’s hands. I am thankful any and all religious freedoms I have and pray for opportunities to share God’s Word with others.

Let me add that I give you my opinion–never accept it or the opinion of others without testing it God’s Word.

Jesus Faithfulness

Faith in Jesus? or

The Faith of Jesus?

In reading different Bible translations, such as KJV and NKJV, I find some differences that change the meaning of the verse. I am not a student of Greek–wish I were. I am guessing that when there is not a clear transfer from one language to the other, the translator may choose to use what he or she is predisposed to believe. For example, Romans 3:22

NKJV: “Even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on allwho believe.”

KJV: “Even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe:”

WOW! There is a big difference in the meaning of these two verses. I’d choose the KJV because my faith in Jesus is very strong some days and weak on other days. Bad news if I died when I had a down mood swing.

One has to be 100% righteous to be in the presence of God. It scares me to think that my eternal destiny depends on my faith.

BTY: To have faith in someone is the same as believing in them.

But, I cannot flip from one translation to the other and pick out what pleases me any more than I can decide to omit verses that seem to contradict or that I don’t agree with.

Since I cannot depend on the strength of my faith, I cannot depend on my judgment in picking the best translation. So, which is the best?

What’s the Answer?

I think—now here is where you should sit up and take notice–I’ve just told you that I cannot depend on myself to make judgment call.

What I think needs to be taken with a grain (shaker-full) of salt.

The truth? What I think or what any person thinks should never be taken as the definitive answer. Instead, check it out for yourself.

OK, now with this said, I will give you my opinion. Any translation is good. Just don’t make conclusions after reading one verse. One verse doesn’t always give you the best understanding anymore than reading one sentence in a mystery book would give you enough clues to solve the mystery.

Let’s look for clues in Romans 3:21-22 NKJV to decide if righteousness depends on our faith or on the faithfulness of Jesus.

21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,

UUM! The Law was the rules God gave to Moses. Since everyone breaks these laws, all of mankind is doomed to hell. This is because one must be righteous to be in the presence of God. thus could not be in the presence of God.

This verse is like a newspaper headline announcing a way to heaven. YEA!!!

Readers should be scanning the news for the answer. We are talking about a way for sinners to go to heaven. Let’s read more……

22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;

It’s the “faith in Jesus Christ” that we are looking for clues about. For now, notice that the righteousness of God is promised ONLY to those who believe (i.e. have faith in Jesus.)

I immediately thought of the verse about the devil believing.

“Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.” James 2:19

Actually, this is a relief because I’ve already confessed that my faith (belief) in Jesus seems to rise and fall with my mood swings. It lets me know righteousness isn’t achieved by my faith. But, this is being based on what I think.

Don’t Forget: The only truth is God’s Word, so let’s read on.

23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

This is a well read verse. By itself it seems to indicate that we are sinners and as such don’t have what it takes to get into heaven. YIKES!

What happened, the headline news is about sinners going to heaven. The lack of a period at the end of vs. 23 gives us a clue that there is more to this. Let’s see if verse 24 provides a solution–

24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus,

Here it is—God has a plan for our justification. We are justified by GOD’s GRACE, which means we had nothing to do with it. Nothing we did or said or ever will do makes us justified—i.e. qualified to be righteous.

From the beginning of time, God’s rule has been that if you sin you spiritually die. This is a death resulting in you being separated from God for eternity. YIKES! One would think everyone would be more interesting in their eternal location. After all Vs. 23 says we have all sinned, which means we deserve to be on the road to hell.

GOOD NEWS!

Because Jesus Christ, God incarnate (in human form) was sinless, He qualified to pay the price for our sins.

My understanding is that at the second in time when Jesus took on our sins, He experienced the agony of being separated from God.

Matthew 27: 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Since a sin is doing anything out of the will of God and God’s will was for Jesus to ransom His  children, Jesus’ prayer of having the “cup” removed from Him had to be this “cup” of eternal separation. This request was in God’s will.

Praise the Lord, Jesus redeemed us–Jesus paid the ransom (price) required for sin. Since this was an act of God’s GRACE–we did nothing to earn this gift.

Jesus Did It All.

Yes, Jesus died for our sins. But, we could die for our own sins and be separated from God. This means the glorious part is still to come—

25 (Jesus,) whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed,

Now there is a lot going on in this verse. I added Jesus at the beginning of the verse so we are reminded who is being talked about.

Jesus is our propitiation, meaning that His death was an acceptable sacrifice (payment) for our sins. THIS IS THE GOOD NEWS THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!! YEA! All is forgiven!

Because Jesus Blood Sacrifice on the cross was acceptable –God was PROPITIATED–appeased–satisfied–etc… and as a result, Jesus was no longer separated from God, and He was raised from the grave.

Symbolically, our sin nature was nailed to the cross with Jesus–it died with Jesus. When Jesus rose from the grave our new nature (spirit nature) rose with Jesus. Unfortunately, we have to drag around the dead rotten sin nature while we live on Earth. This sin nature continues to commit the sins that Jesus died for.

Now the rest of verse 25 tells us that this was all part of God’s original plan –designed before creation to demonstrate His righteousness.

The bottom line is that God didn’t come up with this redemption plan after Adam sinned. God doesn’t wait around for us to make decisions so that He can figure out ways to make it all work out for our good. With our very limited mental abilities, we try to think like God–We can’t. We try to limit God’s abilities. We can’t do that either. God’s ways are not our ways. Asking God WHY? is a waste of energy. More about this another day. Now to the next verse.

26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Again, Jesus’ death and resurrection puts us on the path to glory–not because we have done something to earn this. Instead, it demonstrates God’s righteousness.

Because of God’s plan of redemption, we are justified, thus we are righteous.

Wait a minute—what’s this last part of vs.26 mean? I was ready to close the book and be content with my future in eternity. Now it says that God justifies those with faith IN Jesus.

Hold on–As before mentioned, you have to collect all the clues. I read about faith in

Romans 12:3

“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”

OK! God gives me my faith. Until more clues from God’s Word proves me wrong, I conclude that one can only have faith in Jesus because of Jesus’ faithfulness.

Jesus Created All Things

It’s interesting how the Bible lesson I present each week develops. I study and make choices, but the ideas seem to flip from one topic to the next.

The lesson taught today was not selected during Bible study. Instead, it was while creating craft stuff for a friend. Let me explain. My friend directs a yearly city-wide fair. She calls it “FUN-DAY,” which is an appropriate description of the kid games and crafts available.

This project is not funded by any organization, but fancy stuff is not necessary for kids to have fun. I help by collecting different things on sale during the year, and then create crafts and games for the kids.

While creating several craft examples using 3-D stick-on foam designs, it occurred to me to have Bible verses on labels for the kids to attach to the cards.

Now the craft was linked to the Bible and of course my next thought was to use the cards in my Bible class. I chose the following verse for the lesson:

John 1:3 “All things were made through Him (Jesus), and without Him nothing was made that was made.”

The verse and the cards were a perfect fit.I told the class that kids attending “Fun Day”  would be making making similar cards.

One class member suggested using the cards as a book mark in their Bibles. That is what she plans to do with her card.

The book mark idea prompted another lady, who is more challenged in her thinking, to tell us about her Bible, which is a picture book. She repeatedly said that God made the Sun, the Stars and the Moon. Then she would add that God made the Earth and the animals and people.

How blessed we are to have this sweet lady in our group. Her eyes sparkle when she describes things in her Bible.  She is a reminder that while the Bible is a book about God it is also a book from God with good news about Jesus.

The Good News from God in the Bible is that He, in human form, was the sinless substitute sacrifice required as payment for the sins of His children.

The Bible gives us clues for how we can deepen our relationship with Jesus our Lord–our creator–our savior.

The Bible tells us that He chose us before He created everything. Ephesians 1

The Bible tells us that He gives us the faith needed to develop the gifts He gives us. Rom. 12

The Bible tells us that we trust (believe) in Jesus because we are one of His sheep (children). John 10

We will be studying the previous clues for better developing our relationship with Jesus as well as many others in the near future. We invite you to come back and read about our adventures in digging out and using clues found in God’s Word.

Any Ideas for Accomplishing the Following?

I’d like to get a group of kids–elementary would work great–to help me with a craft workshop. The elderly could pick out the foam pieces they want on a card and the kids could peel off the backing and stick it on the card. Some could do their own peeling–but many cannot. Now all I have to do is get someone to bring a group of kids. I find it difficult to get anyone interested in going to the nursing home. HELP!! I NEED IDEAS!!

Shocking

News From Golden Years

April 24, 2011

I love my Saturday Bible class at Golden Years Nursing Home. Now that I have a microphone, everyone can hear me. The class is much more attentive as well as interactive.

Opps! Did I say attentive. Seems that Mrs. Victoria Lueke has dozed off.

Or, maybe the camera caught her trying to block out the VERY LOUD SCREECHING  sound from the speaker when I walked in front of it.

I’ll have to be careful not to do that again. It startled everyone–including ME!

While the sound was startling, Mary was concerned that I had been shocked by the clip-on microphone. It took time to explain what had happen and that I could not be electrocuted.

I do so encourage anyone working with a group of elderly, to use a microphone. The number that activity participate in my class has greatly increased.

Now that everyone can hear and know that the Bible is being discussed, there are fewer interruptions from one special coffee-junkie who would be happy to have a coffee IV 24/7.

I never cease to be startled with her commanding request!

“I WANT SOME COFFEE!”

It lets me know that she is not in a study mode and wants coffee. I explain that I am not serving coffee and she seems satisfied, but I know to expect another request equally as loud.

This is part of teaching at a nursing home–

Is it worth it? You bet!

Bible Lesson:

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Matthew 11:15

The “EARS TO HEAR” in this verse refers to having the ability to hear God’s Word.

We have been studying about our two natures, Our Flesh Nature and Our Spirit Nature.

The Flesh Nature doesn’t have the ability to hear God–this nature is hardened, like Pharoah when he refused to let the Israelites leave Egypt.

The Spirit Nature can and desires to hear God. It is this nature that not only hears but can believe God’s Word.

Who has a Spirit Nature? God’s children, who are often referred to as sheep. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice..”

My Sheep Hear My Voice

Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch. Then the Jews surrounded him and said to him, “How long do you keep us in doubt? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me. But you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of my hand.” - John 10:22-28

Baptized in Jesus

Flesh Nature vs. Spirit NatureI am been presenting lessons to the elderly about our two natures: flesh nature and spirit nature.

Flesh Nature, AKA:
Sin Nature; Flesh; Old Man

Spirit Nature, AKA:
New Creation, New Man

Today’s lesson is about the death of our Flesh Nature. Romans 6: 3a describes the death and burial of our Flesh Nature—

Therefore, we were buried with Him through baptism into death; Romans 6:3a

The part of us that died with Jesus on the cross was our Flesh Nature A.K.A. Old Man; Sin Nature; Flesh.

The only information I remember studying at church about baptism referred  to the Christian ritual with water. Knowing that the word baptism in the Bible doesn’t always refer to water makes many scriptures much easier to understand.

For example: In Romans 6:3a printed above, baptism into death has nothing to do with water. Instead, it is obviously metaphorically referring to being immersed into death.

Being baptized could be stated as being immersed in something.

Examples:

  1. To dye a white shirt purple one would baptize (immerse) it in purple dye.
  2. To be baptized in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit could be interpreted as immersing then in the Gospel. Matthew 28:19
Matthew 28:19 describes how the people in vs. 19 are to be taught. Since vs. 20 is a continuation of the sentence from vs. 19, water baptism is not the likely meaning.

Matthew 28:19-20

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

While our Flesh Nature died and was buried with Jesus, we are still dragging it around with us. As a scientists, I see dead things housing living organisms. Thus, our Flesh Nature is rotting–stinky–houses everything unacceptable to God. P.T.L. this rotting Flesh Nature remains buried when our physical bodies die. Only our Spirit Nature will be going to Heaven–YEA!

Looking for God’s Message

RainbowAfter studying the parables of Jesus in Matthew 13, it occurred to me that in preparing Bible lessons teachers as well as pastors are guilty of writing parables about Bible verses.

For example, Genesis 9:14 is part of God’s correspondence with Noah. God is describing the covenant (contract) He made with Noah and his descendants as well as all living creatures on Earth.

It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the  earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, ” Genesis 9:14   Enlarged Print, PDF for Genesis 9 14

Genesis 9:14 is just part of a sentence, but it is often used to tell a story that actually has nothing to do with the contents from which it is taken.

One common teacher-generated parable builds on the following analogies:

“..when God brings a cloud over the earth..” is compared to hardships in ones life brought by God.

…the bow will be seen in the cloud,” is compared to God providing deliverance (a solution).

Basically, Genesis 9:14 is often used for a lesson to about hardships and knowing that God will provide answers. After all, God brought the hardships–so there has to be a reason –another way of saying that God is training us for specific jobs.

I do believe that “All things work for the good of those who love the love, those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

My next statement is a new thought for me and one that I have not applied in the past.

I am going to start searching the scriptures for the message God has recorded instead of searching for terms and phrases to create a lesson for a specific topic.

WOW! How many times have I used concordances (before Google) to find a scripture for a specific lesson topic? Too many is the answer.

Now back to Genesis 9:14. To understand this verse, we need to understand who is talking and who is hearing the message. Actually, for complete comprehension, we need to read the whole story about Noah and the flood. But for those who know the story, the following verses give us enough to understand that Genesis 9:14 is a very important promise (covenant) from God. It gives us assurance that God will never destroy the Earth again with water.

Will global warming produce flooding that will destroy the Earth? Nope! God is in charge of the Earth and He promised that He would not do destroy the Earth with a flood again.

When you see a rainbow–Remember God’s promise.

Genesis 9: 12-15

12God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations;  13I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth.  14″It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud,  15and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.
